ABC ECO LOFTS
Location: Aspen Airport Business Center, Aspen, CO
Project Description: The architecture developed from the pursuit of several competing goals: The first required optimizing, in three dimensions, the location of the program elements as they related to available site views. Upon analysis, site views proved to be highly selective and in general, improved with elevation; The second goal was to reinforce positive pedestrian site connections to the AABC restaurants, bus stops, and trails. The plan geometry and circulation is inflected toward the site stair that leads to Louis Swiss Bakery, a dance studio, and the heart of the AABC commercial core; The third goal was to create a serviceable, yet elegant image of a residential industrial loft, that would provide an oasis within a context unconcerned with dwelling, pedestrian activity or automobile management. Signature architectural features of the AABC are employed. The CMU parapeted common wall, repetitive bay composition, and industrial material covenant requirements extend and domesticate the vocabulary. The repetitive articulation of individual units was felt to be important for a sense of ownership, as well as the expression of the sustainable technologies that support them.
